(J)ournal (O)f (K)1ng (E)ljay – “The Running Journal” (5.12.10)

May 12, 2010 k1ngeljay 2 comments

This is the part of the week where I take time out to reflect on the madness that’s happened. I just talk about a few things and move on… Simple enough, right? (Caution: this is extremely random. Refer to the last one if you don’t believe me)

Subliminals Are Cool…

Sometimes. It’s nice to sometimes hear a verse with a lyric or two that makes your head spin and spark up conversation between you and another person who had the same moment. However, if your name’s Pusha T, then I’m just going to go ahead and say you’re overdoing it. We know you don’t like Lil’ Wayne (See? Link) If y’all say it’s over, then stop talking about the man, but if you’re going to go in (reference Young Jeezy’s “Trap or Die 2” mixtape), say his name and go on from there. It’s getting a little old now.

Milk Carton Madness…

Anybody seen Cassidy? Blu Cantrell? Dru Hill? Lil Zane? Jagged Edge? Fort Minor? Just wondering.

I still lowkey think Usher's a "Fallen Soldier"...

Mid-Life Crisis?

I think Usher needs to go to church. He went from being love struck in songs, to making an anthem about signing divorce papers, to trying to solicit a ménage a trios via song with two random groupies at a bar. I mean, it’s cool to see that normal people aren’t the only people with crazy problems, but wow man…  Direction would be nice in this case for him.

Office Space Radio Spazzout…

I really want to know what’s wrong with the radio in this day and age? I’m not talking about XM radio, I just mean the basic hip-hop/R&B radio stations that play when you’re in your car and your flipping channels. It’s to the point now where they will play a song about ANYTHING. Case in point: Usher’s “Lil Freak.” Let’s look at the lyrics!

Verse 1:

“Hey girl, yeah you the business, so what’s the business
Don’t be shy, I’m just talkin to you girl
Hey ma, yo where your man at, I know you got that cause you too fine to be single, he at home but he done f**ked up
I swooped this girl up and what I’m about do to you about to feel I did it wrong
Cause I’m about to have a ménage with this lady and some freaks at the bar who like fu**in with a star

(AND THE HOOK GOES…)

“If you’re f**kin with me? Really f**kin with me? You go get some girls and bring them to me.
if you f**kin with me? Really f**kin with me? You let her put her hands in your pants,
Be my little freak”

STOP. Are you for real? I think there’s more edits in this song than there is in both Drake radio songs combined. Even Nicki Minaj’s verse in the song only had one edit in it. So what do we do when R&B like this is getting airplay at the most popular times in the day, and kids are hearing this and singing it?

Oversaturation…

Yup. Officially tired of the Beyonce and Lady Gaga movements. Respect the work they put in, but I still think Telephone is a mad overrated song. It’s not that good to me, lol.

He picked the perfect time to have one of the worst games of the season, didn't he?

Only One King…

And since Lebron can’t handle the pressure, lol. I’m confused as to why he just decided to disappear last game. He says his elbow was fine, but his jumper looked like it affected him, and the one lone dunk he had Game 5 was two-handed. But he says his elbow was fine…

…So I’ll take his word for it and just assume that he had no desire to win the game. Whenever Lebron James exerts himself, they win. When he’s passive, they lose. This has been the formula for them for over 3 years, so why is everyone else so surprised that the Cavs suck without him playing?

And why is Lebron content with being passive in the PLAYOFFS? That frustrates me as a fan of the NBA. Play hard or go sit down somewhere.

Random Thoughts…

How much money do you think Terry Crews makes for those Odor Blocker commercials?… How much money do you think William Shatner gets broken off for the recurring “Priceline Negotiators” commercials?… How long do you think it’ll take Geico to realize that their commercials need to go back to actually being funny?…How long do you think it’ll take for people to realize that the marketing team behind Drake is pure genius?…How long before people realize that Miley Cyrus does crazy stuff like that all the time, and that this isn’t that bad in comparison?… How long before people realize that the only reason it’s such a big deal is because of the Disney image they try to portray?…

That’s it for this week.

Kal-J – “The 4Word” (Mixtape Review)

April 9, 2010 k1ngeljay Leave a comment

"The 4Word" might not feel like a full-fledged mixtape because of it's short length, but it's still more solid and well-rounded than a lot of mixtapes out right now.

Naptown Hip Hop…

One place that isn’t exactly known for its hip-hop prowess (for now) is Indianapolis, IN. I lived there for high school, and there were always local cats there that wanted to rap, but I had never heard nothing that made me legitimately see anyone as marketable or even as that dope of a rapper until about a year or two ago, when I heard of the Wiz Kids and Kal-J.

Kal-J recently dropped a nice 10-track mixtape entitled “The 4Word”, hosted by DJ Ames (oversea DJs, for the win) which is actually better than I expected it to be. Each song shows some type of lyrical prowess, and Kal-J’s flow is solid throughout the whole mixtape. Each song for the most part has a different angle too, especially the cut “Am I Dreaming”, in which he decides to go off the deep end and journal about some of the crazier things he had “seen.”

That last song I mentioned actually shows off how talented he is too, because I follow him on Twitter, and I told him about that particular instrumental (which is Joe Budden’s “Exxes”), and he literally wrote the song in less than an hour and a half. Never heard Budden’s version, and made the song his own. Legit pen skills…check…

Also, you can tell he’s a low-key nerd (like me) with the multiple sports and video game references (“I’m Tom Brady…you Brady Quinn”; “You need a strategy guide to see how to damage me”), and his punchlines are well timed and tied together.

Although the mixtape is short with 10 tracks, it’s DEFINITELY worth a listen. Short, sweet, and to the point, it’s a solid listen with a few tracks that might make it into normal iPod rotation if you let it…  Check it out. Seriously.

QuESt – “How Thoughtful” (Mixtape Review)

February 14, 2010 k1ngeljay 2 comments

How thoughtful of him to take a picture of himself looking thoughtful for his mixtape...

More importantly than ANYTHING, I finally got the spelling right (Q-u-E-S-t). That’s an accomplishment for me… Ok, let me stop joking. On to the review.

The last time I covered QuESt, I said something to the effect of “I would pay for music like this…” I think It always surprises me to see an artist develop and grow like he has from his last project to this one. “Broken Headphones” was a great project, but “How Thoughtful” is by far my favorite project I’ve heard from homie.

The Good:

“I like the fact that QuESt has punchlines, but CHOSE to stay on topic and go all in on whatever he was talking about at the time. You can tell he has lines on the outro song (“See What I See”) when he goes into something like a mini-rant during the second verse…” (K1ng Eljay, via “Broken Headphones” review).

That’s what I said last time. This time, it’s a different story. This whole mixtape is basically QuESt flexing his lyrical muscle and showing how easy it is for him switch and flip flows. The punchlines, metaphors, similies, and just CLEVER lines are all throughout this project, and you might not even get all of them at first. I was still catching some of the slickness on my fifth and sixth play-through.

“#HowThoughtfulFacts The mixtape is nothing more than a showcase of my skills.” (QuESt, via Twitter)

Journal Of K1ng Eljay (J.O.K.E.) – “A Quick Question For Bow Wow”

January 7, 2010 k1ngeljay 1 comment

I guess a congratulations is in order? I mean, I guess it takes true talent to barely sell records, but somehow manage to get over a million downloads in a day... This is just confusing.

Ahem…

(Before I begin, please check out this post from QuESt. It inspired this, because I was about to let it go, but as I read his post, it lit a fire. Truthfully. Be easy on him though with the typos, he’s still a “rappah”… lol… )

“For me there’s no more that needs to be done on the music side. I’ve done everything….”

- Bow Wow, addressing the lackluster sales of his last album, “New Jack City II”

This isn’t a diss J.O.K.E., it’s a real J.O.K.E. (in Jay-Z voice)…

So in April, Bow Wow announced his retirement from the rap game in response to New Jack City II BOMBING in record sales. I heard it, and then didn’t hear it. In rap and sports, you NEVER take retirements seriously.

Word to Michael Jordan, Brett Favre, Jay-Z…

Regardless of what you might think or say, Bow Wow’s a decent rapper, and so for him to make that drastic of a claim, and then say he’s accomplished everything, and then suddenly get excited for having a successfully downloaded mixtape… You would think that’s a step in the wrong direction.

Ok, let me explain before you think I’m hating. I swear I’m not. It’s not hate…it’s just…confusion.

Clipse – “Till The Casket Drops” (Album Review)

December 3, 2009 k1ngeljay Leave a comment

It's not dirty money...well...it might be. I wouldn't ask them though. Word of caution.

King Eljay – I could give you some type of introduction, but I really don’t need to. If you know of the Clipse, then you know what they’re capable of and how nice they are lyrically, even If all they do is rap about drugs (on the surface). If you don’t, then now’s the time to get introduced to them.

(Click here for rating scale link)

Flow (Album Playability):
-> .8  <-

For the most part, this album can be played from the beginning to the end. However, one of the things that the Clipse didn’t use to have was that completely playable album, and although the album was great in its own right, there was always that ONE song (or two) that just kind of threw the album in a different direction. Unfortunately…the problem is still here. “Never Will It Stop” sounds like a track removed from one of the Re-Up Gang mixtapes. That isn’t a BAD thing, but in the vibe of the album, this can easily become a skippable track. “Door Man” might get tiring to you too after a couple of plays.

Lyrics: -> 1 <-

Clipse has ALWAYS been nice with the pen, from the first time I bought a bootleg copy of “Lord Willin’” in front of Ford’s Crossing in Tuskegee, AL. Long time ago. Nothing’s changed, and Pusha T has actually gotten NICER with it… Read more…

I got a review for that, and also I guess I could give you a quick hit on Rihanna and Snoop Dogg’s new albums.

Stay tuned…

Juvenile – “Cocky and Confident” (Album Review)

December 3, 2009 k1ngeljay Leave a comment

Well...I never said the album was ORIGINAL...

King Eljay – Juvenile returns with his newest solo album since the release of his highly underrated (in my opinion) album “Reality Check” in 2006. The newest release, “Cocky and Confident”, almost seems as a part two to the last album.

Juve easily combines his street-savvy punchlines with trunk-rattling production with a Southern swagger that a lot of rappers try to imitate (hi Dorrough, how are you today? Swell…swell…) but they never quite duplicate as well.

As far as hip-hop appeal, there’s not much here. Juve stays in the streets with his lyrics, only taking a hip-hop break on the last track to address his son and to tell him not to be like him. To me, it somewhat contradicts his whole CD because he acts as if the street life is something he enjoys and embraces, but then he tells his son not to use him as an example.

Either way, for some solid RAP music (not hip-hop…rap…there’s a difference) that you can play and vibe to in the vehicle, Juvenile does it again. His street style is still prevalent in today’s music climate, and he does it better than most, so you can expect to hear more of the songs off this album on the radio soon.

For better or for worse, depending on how you look at it. I say ok (this time), but I’m one of the few hip-hop heads that has some type of weird appreciation for regular rap music when I’m in the right mood.

So…Yeah.
