Okay, Future, we get it.

Astronaut Status? Must be a direct reference to the absurd drug habits.,,

Future is a very intriguing figure on the scene right now. He’s gather quick and timely mainstream success, however shortlived, with features on club hits like Young Chris’s “Racks”, using his trademark Autotuned groan of a voice to bellow out his love for money, girls, lean and green. Where does it go from there though? It cannot be overlooked that “Tony Montana” and “Magic” were street smashes for sure, but the niche Future is trying to ride is all but exhausted.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury, Exhibit A:

“I’m a dog on these h*es/veterinarian
I make movies/ Tyler Perry”
-”Future Back”

This may be a mixtape, but these lyrics are in no way progressive or thought provoking. There has to be a point when new artists like this realize that pulsating, invasive, banging beats and Autotune affects are not going to be enough to sell their product.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of Future because I respect his work ethic. He’s steady on his mixtape grind, dropping things like True Story and Streetz Watching which, at the time of their release, showed something new. Now Future is stuck at an awkward crossroads. He’s left with a system for making songs that holds a gap for creativity that is closing steadily.

With Astronaut Status, the mood is very much familiar. Future shows no insight into himself, instead settling for musings of drugs and money…. Lord, help me. I grow weary.

I suppose one thing to look forward to on this tape is Future’s uncanny ability to craft a catchy hook. See tracks like: “Birds Take a Bath” and “Jordan Diddy”. Don’t worry your inquisitive minds on the subject matter though, because you might find yourself smiling and shaking your head in a manor reminiscent of my resentment for artists like Gucci Mane.

The Positive:

-Future can make mainstream appealing tracks because of his Autotune heavy style.
-He’s confident and unapologetic in his tone.
-Gucci Mane and Ludacris provide surprisingly solid guest verses. Light-years ahead of Mr. Astronaut himself.

The Negative:

-Lyrics are irrelevant and ignorant.
-Sometimes I can’t understand what he is saying, but nine times out of ten I assume it has something to do with codeine syrup.
