Pac Div – “Don’t Mention It” (Mixtape Review)
To this day, I still thank the homie Tallen for putting me on Pac Div, because without him talking about “Whiplash”, I would not be up on their music. That being said, I’ve been lowkey waiting for them to drop their 2nd mixtape “Don’t Mention It” ever since I heard it was in development. Then, suddenly…it dropped Monday. Out of nowhere. I would’ve had a review up for it quicker…
But then an atomic bomb was dropped an hour later by the name of Eminem’s “Despicable” freestyle and it just made things not matter for me…
But regardless of the distractions, the mixtape is here, and it’s definitely worth the download. Pac Div continues their theme of making album-mixtapes (a theme that other rappers should learn, seriously), which means no DJ tags, no random screaming…just music. Nice.
The Good:
I can’t say if this mixtape is better or worse than the last one, which is great news because the last mixtape was surprisingly one of the best I had heard in a long time. This time, it’s not such a surprise, and the quality is still there. Lyrical presence is still there, the production is solid, and the guest appearances from Pill (YEAH), Colin Munroe, and others make this seem more like an album than a mixtape, which once again is a GREAT thing.
The Bad:
Although they have a lot of hip-hop songs, there are a couple of songs they relapse into familiar territory of relationships and weed-smoking and things like that, but even those songs are done so refreshingly well, and so soulful, even if you don’t smoke you’ll find yourself playing the song as if you can relate.
Maybe that’s just me…
Also, some of the hooks just seem like chants, and some people will think that’s a lack of creativity on their part, but I’d argue against that.
Bottom Line:
Bottom line, this is a dope mixtape that’s well-worth the download. I’m hoping they can carry over this momentum to their debut release that comes out supposedly this summer. This is the type of music I can see myself supporting heavily, and so… I will. Check this tape out.
