Bun B – “No Mixtape” (Mixtape Review)
We all do remember that a review is nothing but a glorified opinion…right? Ok, making sure. On to the review…
Recently, I saw a new track from Bun B on allhiphop.com, so I clicked it automatically. The first thing I hear is Bun saying:
“N*gga called me, talkin’ ‘bout ‘B! What’s the name of the mixtape? When’s it comin’ out?’ I said ‘B***h, this is the mixtape! We goin’ live right now! This track seven!”
You can’t say the UGK Alumni doesn’t have a sense of humor.
I can honestly say that I was not expecting Bun B to drop a mixtape of straight freestyles and album snippets, but because of the fact that there’s no DJ drops, no edits, and it’s just straight Bun B for the entire mixtape…. If you’re a UGK fan, you need this. This will get you excited for the album. Point blank.
The Good:
It’s just Bun. No DJ Drama, no DJ snatch backs halfway through the verses, no cameos. It’s just Bun B wrecking every beat possible…
Except Exhibit C. The beat came on, and Bun cut it off and showed off his sense of humor again (“Nope, it’s time to put this to rest. We gon’ have “Exhibit Triple-F” in a minute..”
For some people, that’s a bad thing, but I think it’s a good thing. Bun has always held it down on other people’s tracks, and his albums have been nicely done as well. If he’s this focused right now…the new album is going to be one we’re going to be talking about for a long time when it drops.
Also, there are a few album snippets included. Just enough for you to hear what I mean when I say “Bun’s a problem.”
(Sidenote: Bun went in on the SlaughterHouse cut “Cuckoo”… maybe he should’ve been on the original version too. He HANDLED that. Not better than Joe Budden, but still…)
The Bad:
It’s just Bun. Like I said, this could be a good or a bad thing. Some people won’t like the fact the mixtape has no actual “full” songs on it, except the bonus track at the end, “Pants on the Ground.”
Yes…that “Pants on the Ground.” Bun remixed the American Idol audition. No comment.
No full songs, just Bun over other rapper’s beats dropping dope freestyles. But keep in mind, it’s all Bun….meaning the mixtape pretty much has the same vibe to it, so it easily can get to the point where you’re at track 9 and you feel like you’ve heard everything the tape has to offer.
Bottom Line:
Bun B is consistent. He always drops good music. This mixtape is nothing different. For what it is (a compilation of his latest freestyles), “No Mixtape” is a must hear. If you want a mixtape-album, then this isn’t exactly something to get excited for, but I think you still owe it to yourself if you’re a Bun B fan to listen to it.
