J.O.K.E. (Journal of K1ng Eljay) – “A Slight Difference”

Sometimes, you don't even have to speak to a hater. Just wave and keep moving.

I’ve been noticing a disturbing trend the last year or two that I’ve been writing these J.O.K.E.s and album reviews. There are a lot of times where I’d go on a website and a new song by Lil’ Wayne and/or Drake would be a feature story – because websites usually love to leech on to people that generate interest, and they do it very well – and before I even listen to the song, I’d read the comments just to get a feel of what I’m about to hear. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t, but regardless I listen to the song for myself before stating my opinion.

There are several types of comments that are nested below the song, usually. You have your “Stans”, which don’t even listen to the song. They just hit the comment box and exclaim that everything Wayne touches is gold, with things like…

“WEEZY F ALL DAY! Young MOO-LAH on the MAP!”

Then you have the people that don’t listen to the song, but want you to hear their mixtape. For some reason, they think that because I see THEIR name commenting on every song, this is suddenly going to make ME say “Hey, maybe I should see if they’re NOT a traditional MySpace rapper!”

No. I refuse to let you waste my free internet listening to your music. Then, you also have the type of people that can’t type to save their lives, with things like…

“U kno wat is beez abat! Dis dat new ish 1 be lokin 4! Gunna put dis on fa da shawty!”

Then you have the type of comments where people say that they’re just not feeling the song, and then later on they’re getting blasted on because they don’t agree with the majority. A lot of people even go as far as to say that the guy hates on Wayne because he doesn’t like that particular song. The comment board gets heated and by the time you reach the halfway point of the comments, it’s not even about the song anymore. Two guys are going back and forth, comparing penis sizes and talking about the intercourse they had with each other’s mothers the night before.

I actually just made it sound more intelligent than it really is. My apologies.

This whole “misunderstanding” thing happens in real life too. A lot of times, I’ll ride with a friend or two and turn on the radio. I’ll hear a song and instantly turn it off. They get mad at me because I won’t let the song play, and I just tell them I’m tired of the song because it’s EVERYWHERE (usually a Beyonce song). Or even if it’s an Alicia Keys song, and I cut it off because I’m no longer able to separate her personal life with her music and it turns my stomach to hear her sing about honest love and relationships.

I’m not hating on her, I just dislike it.

A new lunch iten to go along with Haterade! Now available at your nearest XXL blog store.

I’m not knocking anyone who loves to follow a schizophrenic R&B media diva and a home-wrecker.  By all means, if that’s your cup of tea then you should buy some crumpets to go with it and snack up. It’s just not my thing.

Now…I’m hating. Even though I essentially just said the same thing twice, the way you say things can make you come off as a hater.

And that’s where the problem comes in when people discuss things and interests that they enjoy. Strong opinions can turn people into haters when it’s not hate… It’s just a strong opinion.

Hate and dislike are two completely different things. When you dislike something, all it means is that you gave it a chance and it just wasn’t your thing. I dislike Chamillioniare and Papoose. I’m not denying the fact that they have talent and that sometimes they make great songs, but usually they are not artists that I follow. I don’t like Cham’s flow at times, and Papoose to me sounds the same on all of his songs. If they came out with a new song, I’d listen to it though and give it a chance.

When you dislike something, you can still talk about it intelligently. You should be able to tell why you don’t like it, and keep it moving.

Hate however, is a completely different type of breed. A lot of hate is just unfounded with the purpose to leave others dumbfounded. You usually have to be a big celebrity to get these types of ignorant, irate, foam-spewing, profane-mouthed people that refuse to listen to anything that you say, and base their image of you off of one thing that you’ve done…or continue to do (like AutoTune).

Now a lot of people think that you can have intelligent haters. I don’t. I think that if you waste so much time researching something in order to just spew hate towards it, then that just shows how stupid you are for wasting your life hating on the next man’s hustle. It’s different if it’s a hustle that’s detrimental to people’s health (like drug-dealing, being a hitman, or reviewing Disney movies for a living), but if it’s not anything that’s hurting someone else, then why bother? Why even make a song about it? You can just say that you’re off of that and skip on to the next one.

It's true. We don't. No homo.

Yes, that was a subliminal.

I don’t understand why someone would assemble a group JUST to diss another group that has a great buzz because of some personal issue. I also don’t understand why some stupid rapper would name themselves after a Benz, but I think that’s proof he’s not exactly the most intelligent rapper…

Yes, that was also a subliminal.

The basic difference between dislike and hate is that to dislike something you have to be intelligent. Hate usually comes from idiots who are unable to leave things alone. Hate’s a strong word, and most of the time the word is used is blatantly incorrect. Just because someone dislikes something doesn’t mean that they’re a hater.

I think it’s time for people to start realizing that there’s way too many people in the world for all of us to agree on one thing. There’s bound to be a person that’ll dislike something that you think is dope. On the other hand, Kanye said that they’ll always be haters…that’s the way it is.

Hopefully people can learn to tell the “slight” difference before internet thugs kill themselves.

Three for three with these subliminals today…
