The F.L.O.W.S System…
So this is how I’m rating the albums. I figured I needed a way to explain it to anyone interested. It’s a pretty neat acronym: F.L.O.W.S.
F – FLOW
How does the album play front to back? To be as blatant as possible, if you put this CD in and press play from track one until the end, can you listen to the whole thing straight without getting to a skipable track?
L – LYRICS
Simple, elementary stuff? Or complex stuff? Are you feeling smarter as you listen? Is there any level of intelligence in the words? Is it just stupid? Is there substance here?
O- ORIGINALITY
Has it been done before? Is there something here that sets this apart from a different album? It is possible to do something that’s been done in an original way…Does this cd accomplish that? What sets this CD apart from every other CD out?
W – WILDCARD
Pretty much the blank space in Scrabble, lol. Anything else that might enhance this album? The wildcard, this could mean cameos (or solo), interludes (I’m a sucker for comedy), or anything else that pushes me to recommend (or not recommend) it to you.
S – SOUND
This one’s easy…. How does it sound? To be specific, the instrumentals, the beat, the levels of the vocals, blah blah… Do they enhance of subtract from the value of the overall album? Does it all come together nicely?
The FLOWS system is still a work in progress, but usually it’s anywhere between 0 to 1 point awarded for each letter, the total is added together to get the rating for the album.
We’ll see if it holds up.
